17 years ago, on first inheriting my garden and with scant knowledge (but no lack of enthusiasm) for plants or planting there was one plant which always ‘did’ for me, the slightly thuggish and rather too ‘salmony’ pink, Geranium endressii. Since then my admiration for this well- tempered group has grown to become a bit of a passion and I have introduced them throughout my garden.

There is a geranium to suit all situations and an overwhelming variety to choose from. Some, such as G. sylvaticum are happiest in shade, bringing light to the dreariest corners, whilst others thrive in full sun and grow to heights of up to a metre. G. macrorrhizum obligingly retains most of its foliage over winter and tolerates dry shade which makes it invaluable planted under trees. G. pheum is the first to flower in late spring and from then on a host of others will flower right through to the first frosts - what more could one ask for.
