As I write, autumn is showing its true colours and snatched days in the garden have been a joy. A gloriously mild October has lulled me into a false sense of security but it can’t be too long before first frosts arrive to snap at the heels of the unprepared gardener who hasn’t yet moved tender perennials and succulents into safety, or protected precious containers not guaranteed frost proof.

Other jobs are no less important. Raking leaves from the lawn is a necessary task that is doubly rewarded if you collect the leaves for leaf mould and by spring they will have rotted down sufficiently to spread as a rich mulch. My own soil is now perfectly balanced, ph neutral, which I’m sure must be due to the copious additions of compost and leaf mould to what 20 years ago was acidic London clay.

Sadly this can be my only reason for satisfaction - these pictures remind me of certain jobs not yet done!
