With so many plants now at their peak it has been hard to decide on a subject for this month’s page but hardy geraniums have won the day!
I have collected this group of plants over many years now and with a wide variety of growing habits there is a geranium suitable for virtually any garden situation or requirement.
Not prone to disease or pest attack they are easy and trouble-free to grow - even the slugs that thrive in our North London clay ignore them entirely!
Division is simple so I have planted them all around my garden, testing them in inhospitable places such as beneath trees in dry dense shade. More often than not they have thrived and now add welcome colour to previously dull spots.
My current favourite is G. x oxonianum ‘Thurstonianum’ (pictured top right).
Not commonly seen, its petals are reflexed and tipped with bright magenta giving the flowers an unusual starry appearance. With a long flowering season, from late spring onwards, this plant has become a treasure.
